Poor Lulu can't sleep - she is worried. What if an alligator steals into the room, or a tiger prowls around the bed? But Lulu need not worry. Her mother is there to keep her safe and soothe away her fears. The reader will relish Lulu's wonderful flights of imagination, as well as admire Lulu's mother's calm determination, in this perfect read-aloud picture book for the very young. This is a wonderfully charming, quietly reassuring picture book that children will love for its humour and gentle reassurance.

Paulette Bogan lives in New York. She wrote GOODNIGHT LULU for her youngest daughter who was afraid of going to bed. She is the writer and illustrator of several other books for children although this is the first of her books to be published in the UK.
PreSchool-Grade 2-A humorous addition to the "What if?" genre of bedtime stories. A little chick systematically prevents her mother from leaving the barn by asking what would happen if a bear, a tiger, or an alligator came in while she was sleeping. Momma hen dutifully provides reassurances, such as, "Then I would pull its tail and roar and drag that tiger all the way back to the jungle where it belongs!" While she emphasizes that those animals aren't around to bother Lulu, she nonetheless calms her offspring by describing her intended actions. Vibrant watercolor-and-ink illustrations are done in rich shades of green, maroon, purple, and gold. The spreads are uncluttered, the images are large enough for group viewing, and there is a story everywhere one looks. The front endpapers show the three imagined "monsters" chasing Lulu and her two pig friends, while on the final endpapers the roles are reversed. A good choice to freshen up bedtime collections.
