Isla moves down with her parents from Scotland to England and instantly feels herself in an alien land. But then she meets Luke and slowly their friendship blossoms into love. Each chapter reveals the alternate viewpoints of Isla and Luke—Isla the motormouth, Luke more measured. With the potential to appeal to both boys and girls, this is a brilliant first novel from a very talented author.

Rhian Tracey is a teacher. This is her first novel, and she is currently working on a sequel following the lives of Isla and Luke. She lives in Northamptonshire.
Grade 8-10--Isla is forced to leave Edinburgh for Maidstone, England so that her parents can take care of her grandmother. Luke lives with his brother, Matthew, a college student, while their obsessive mother copes with her sadness about her divorce. The teens meet at school where no one can comprehend Isla's Scottish accent and no one can understand Luke's inner anger--but they understand one another. The story is told from their alternating points of view, showing how Luke and Isla help one another to deal with love, loss, and everything in between. With poignancy and life, Tracey captures the angst of youth, the frustrations of friendship, and the bonds of family. The author clearly portrays the feelings of mourning, insecurity, and fear of the unknown future while keeping the story fresh and unpredictable. While the Scottish and British dialects may be new for some, and the organization of British schooling may be unfamiliar, Tracey keeps the narrative moving with clues and explanations.--Delia Fritz, Mercersburg Academy, PA

I wanted to push the red emergency button like they have on trains to stop and you have to pay a fifty pound fine if you didna mean it. I wanted to make the pilot turn the plane around.
