Synopsis
A picture is worth a thousand words, especially in communities where few can read, and the pictures which hang outside the inns and pubs of England have cheered travellers and locals alike for hundreds of years. It is not surprising that some of the oldest, and a few of the oddest, are to be found in London, and that they reflect the variety of people who have lived and worked here, found fame and fortune or notoriety, stirred the spirit or simply supplied a service to the public for generations. This book illustrates many unusual and interesting signs and explains their origins.
About the author
Dominic Rotheroe has lived in or near London most of his life and finds the abundance of London inns as refreshing as did any medieval traveller. He is a freelance film maker and photographer.

These books offer such a wealth of information, social history and local history and pastimes will be forgotten if these and other books aren't available. Always well written and researched and this one is no exception, from the front page to the last lots of photos and drawings to inspire and use as a reference book. There are over 65 London Inn signs shown in this book and I am sure that so many have gone. I looked in a Kelly's book I have on Hampshire and I know it lists Inns in Hampshire in 1899 and there were over 1600 Pubs and Inns.
