Dirleton Castle is one of Scotland's few great stone castles of the 1200s. Despite the damage inflicted on its mighty walls by English artillery during the Wars of Independence, the castle emerged with new owners and new buildings.
The third change of ownership, in the 1500s, resulted in further alterations and additions. Surprisingly, given the castle's chequered history, much of the original structure has survived, affirming its description as 'the pleasantest dwelling in Scotland'.
