About the Author:
Walter Scheidel currently teaches ancient history at the University of Chicago. Formerly Moses and Mary Finley Research Fellow of Darwin College, Cambridge, and a visiting professor at Stanford University, he has published widely on ancient social and economic history, including Measuring sex,
age and death in the Roman empire: explorations in ancient demography (1996) and Death on the Nile: disease and the demography of Roman Egypt (in press). Sitta von Reden is a Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Bristol.
