Despite the large number of works now available on South Africa, Leach's volume should prove to be a useful addition to most collections. It is a journalist's account of South Africa's political situation, written in a very readable style and suitable even for those with no previous knowledge of the topic. The particular merit of this work, however, is that it focuses on the events of the past five years, bringing the narrative up to late 1985. It is not an academic treatise; it makes no attempt to develop any political theory. What it does do is to provide the reader with a background both current and sufficient to follow intelligently events in South Africa as well as the ongoing debate in our country regarding divestment and our government's relations with Pretoria. Recommended. Paul H. Thomas, Hoover Institution Lib., Stanford, Cal.
