9780749471439: Creating Authentic Organizations: Bringing Meaning and Engagement Back to Work

The authors explore the flaws in traditional leadership and offer a framework for a set of management principles relating to self-management, empowerment and the freedom to operate. By sewing back the schism between the corporate persona and the authentic self and re-framing the role of management, this book helps professionals find meaning at work.

Creating Authentic Organizations works beyond the limited remit of authentic leadership and shows how this concept can and should be applied to a workforce to enhance innovation, productivity and adaptability. With models and strategies, it explains how to ensure more authentic dialogue between employees to both discuss smaller issues and have open and meaningful discussion around threats and challenges.

Review:

"Creating Authentic Organizations is a must-read for any HR professional. The authors emphasize bringing meaning and engagement into the workplace; in essence, making more resilient organizations for the future. More than ever we need to create and sustain resilience in our workplaces; this book provides some very useful ideas, diagnostics and approaches." (Cary Cooper Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Affairs, Lancaster University)

"A thought-provoking read from Ryde and Sofianos and a voice of sanity in the asylum; stop what you're doing, read this, and reflect on what you've just stopped doing and where you are going." (Keith Grint Professor of Public Leadership & Management, Warwick Business School)

"It is refreshing to find a book that explains why the best way to run a business is to be yourself, respect your people and trust everyone with the freedom to do their job in their own way and in their own space. Creating Authentic Organizations shows that good management can't be achieved simply by following a process. Success is produced by leaders with character who create a company with personality which is at ease with itself because they pick a group of talented people who 'get it' and trust the organization to trust them to do their best. Managers who take note of the central messages in this book will enjoy a happier and more successful workplace." (John Timpson Chairman, Timpson Ltd)

"19th and 20th century management processes and practices don't work in the knowledge economy of the 21st century. In Creating Authentic Organizations, Robin Ryde and Lisa Sofianos thoughtfully and thoroughly frame the rights and responsibilities required to make organizations and individuals successful for today and tomorrow." (Kai Peters Chief Executive, Ashridge Business School)

"Forget the so-called balance – work/life has fallen prey to a major M&A. Fittingly, and with savvy timing, Ryde and Sofianos have unmasked authenticity as the critical link to worker survival and organizational sustainability. Based on a seemingly simple premise, the power of the authenticity model is its profound resonance for us all; Worker, Manager, Team Leader, Senior Executive, right through to Board Director. The internal war we battle between our private lives and working world can finally call a truce, with the path to both victory and freedom found in the core message of authenticity championed by Ryde and Sofianos." (Virginia Haussegger Adjunct Professor, Inst. for Governance and Policy Analysis, Univ. of Canberra)

"With plenty of checklists and questionnaires too, this is a stimulating book that many managers should find thought provoking." (Frank Dillon The Irish Times)
