Grade 4-7-- The lives of three remarkable men whose discoveries and work have strongly influenced modern medicine and science provide interesting reading. Tames does a good job of detailing these intrinsically intriguing subjects, describing their discoveries and placing each of them in a historical context. Unfortunately, the mundane but serviceable textbook-like design and the uniform two-columns-of-text-per-page format detract from the appeal. Each book is illustrated with mostly black-and-white photographs and drawings and has a fairly current bibliography. "Factfinder" sections--one-page entries that introduce people, ideas, and events relating to the subjects--are sprinkled throughout; they may help readers, but they tend to break up the flow of the text. While the books are clearly intended for middle graders, their brevity will hinder acceptance by middle-grade teachers. These informative and clearly written books are acceptable, but they are unlikely to move off the shelves unless students are seeking material for reports. --Louise L. Sherman, Anna C.
