Grade 5-6-- Tofts guides older children in exploring two mediums, paper and paint. The paint books demonstrate, with thick tempera paints, ways to use stencils, prints, feet and hands, leaves, splashes of paint, string, spools, brushes, rollers, and wax to create designs and objects. The paper books show various ways to fold, curl, cut, bend, weave, glue, crumble, and shape cardboard, wrapping paper, paper bags, envelopes, tubes, boxes, plates, magazines, and construction paper into sometimes attractive and sometimes bold art forms. The end products are sophisticated and arty; some require skill, time, and resources. These books are similar in scope to the "Fresh Start" series (Watts), but have a less sophisticated layout, with illustrations that are at times gaudy. The biggest objection is the limited number of projects offered in each. --Denise Krell, New York Public Library
