With a wealth of photographs, colorful drawings, and stills from popular science-fiction films, they deliver glimpses into human life in the next 50 to 250 years. Some of these intriguing concepts are rated in "Reality Check" charts with four categories: "Feasible Technology," Science Is Sound," "Affordable," and "How Soon." Future World looks at energy resources, housing, and technological advances in everyday life. Cities in the Sky surveys space stations, terraforming, and possible settlements on the Moon and Mars and the problems associated with them. Single paragraphs and captions offer entertaining tidbits of current scientific facts and imaginative ideas. It is the nature of future forecasting to present generalizations and idealized views. These treatments do attempt to ground theories in present-day reality and offer only a few startlingly unusual possibilities, including space elevators within 200 years (Cities). More ideas about the future can be found in Isaac Asimov's "New Library of the Universe" series and Asimov and Robert Giraud's The 21st Century in Space (1996, all Gareth Stevens).
