About the Author

From School Library Journal

ea. vol: 29p. photos. index. (Keeping Minibeasts Series). Watts. 1989. PLB $10.40. Grade 3-5-- Little practical information is offered in these slight, albeit attractively illustrated, introductions. Each title briefly describes physical and behavioral characteristics, natural habitats, and diet of its subject; outlines safe collection methods and handling techniques; and mentions some suitable cages or containers. Frogs also discusses the amphibians' reproductive cycle. Clear color photographs accompany the text on almost every page. An addendum of "Unusual facts" appears at the end of each title. The texts are clearly written and accurate; however, they omit important information and are poorly organized. Although live food, fish tanks, and various exotic species are mentioned in the text, no suggestions are offered as to where to obtain them. In Spiders , the chapter "Dangerous spiders" fails to name the few species that pose a danger to humans. In Frogs , "Collecting frogs" discusses the collection of eggs from ponds but fails to warn that frog eggs and toad eggs are often hard to tell apart. Descriptions of some major physical characteristics are included in the "Unusual facts" sections instead of the main text. The color photographs, while of good quality, lack captions and depict species not identified in the texts. Ricciuti's Shelf Pets: How to Take Care of Small Wild Animals (Harper, 1971; o.p.), written on a higher reading level, includes more detailed information on the same animals. It lists some alternatives to live food, suggests places to obtain equipment, and names dangerous spider species found in the U.S. --Karey Wehner, San Francisco Public Library
