Based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, each book in this thought-provoking series focuses on one area of human rights, such as freedom of speech or workers' rights. Providing both historical information and modern-day case studies, titles in this series examine how human rights are put into action-or are ignored-in today's world, encouraging discussion and debate.

Mike Hirst studied History at Cambridge and then worked in children's publishing. He is now a teacher and freelance writer. He lives in Brighton.
Gr. 4^-8. Part of the What Do We Mean by Human Rights? series, Hirst's information-packed overview of religious and political freedom around the world is a clear choice for school libraries. It includes dramatic documentation on dozens of individuals who have lived by, and in some cases died for, their beliefs. The layout is not particularly appealing, the cover is textbookish, and superfluous drop quotes seem to litter every page. The subject matter, however, is of great importance, and Hirst deals with it in concise, hard-hitting terms, still managing sensitive consideration of such topics as euthanasia, abortion, creation theory, and gays in the military. Powerful black-and-white photos, a glossary, and a list of relevant organizations are included. Shelley Townsend-Hudson
