From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2 Jo has a bit of fever, and would like both of her parents to stay home too; sadly, her mother must go off to work. Jo spends a quiet day in the care of her father, waiting for Mom to come back with a promised surprise, and at last she does (the surprise being a junior version of the medical kit she herself carriescomplete with pills, colored liquids, and what looks like a syringe). Illustrations are softly-colored, done mostly in yellows. Thin lines and minimal shading define figures; spaces are filled but seldom cluttered. MacLachlan's Sick Day (Pantheon, 1979; o.p.) is a similar story, developed with more imagination, but the pictures here are pleasantly free of sex-role stereotypes, and are likely to make a greater impression than the brief text will. Jo's window looks out on a diverse, multi-ethnic urban neighborhood, into which her own parents, an interracial couple, fit very well. Characters are evidently, but not obtrusively, British.
