PreSchool-Grade 2-- This English import is a pretty book that tells a pretty predictable tale of a battered and forgotten toy horse who escapes his trash-can fate by running away. He eventually finds the perfect home and owner: a farm full of horses, and a little girl who carefully fixes him up, paints him, and settles him at night into his own cardboard box stable. The softly colored pictures offer a lovely glimpse of the countryside, a la Edward Ardizzone, but are less successful in portraying the polka-dot horse. He looks the same all the way through the book, regardless of the text's description of him, first as dirty and old, and at the end, white and beautiful. A quiet, poetic story.
