9780749955908: All of Me: My Incredible Story of How I Learned to Live with the Many Personalities Sharing My Body. by Kim Noble with Jeff Hudso

Synopsis

Kim Noble is an accomplished artist whose work has been exhibited around the world. She is a mother with a 13-year-old daughter. She is a bubbly and vivacious woman. To meet her you wouldn't think anything was wrong. But when Kim was younger than five years old, her personality splintered and fractured. In 1995 she was finally diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) which has been described as a creative way to cope with unbearable pain. Now her body plays host to more than 20 different personalities, or 'alters'. There are women and men, adults and children; there is a scared little boy who speaks only Latin, an elective mute, a gay man and an anorexic teenager. Some alters age with her body; others are stuck in time. ALL OF ME takes the reader through the extraordinary world of a woman for whom the very nature of reality is different. It will tell of her terrifying battles to understand her own mind; of her desperate struggle against all odds to win back the child she loved; and of her courage and commitment in trying to make sense of her life. It is by turns shocking, inspiring, sometimes funny, and deeply moving.

About the Author

Kim Noble is a gifted artist whose work has been exhibited around the world. On 6 October 2010 Kim was interviewed by Oprah for Oprah's anniversary show. Jeff Hudson has written and ghostwritten twenty books, including several true-life bestsellers. He has also been published in The Independent, The Guardian and Time Out.

From Booklist

If two’s company and three’s a crowd, what’s a hundred? Mayhem. In her astonishingly understated biography of life with dissociative identity disorder (DID), Noble tells a few of the more than 100 stories of her life. Born south of London to working-class parents who could not afford proper child care, Kim was left with unfit caregivers who repeatedly and brutally abused her. She gained a reputation as a chronic liar and a discipline problem of the first order. For Kim, life was a dizzying wheel of inexplicable mysteries as personalities would waltz into and out of her interior life, each making his or her own changes and keeping them a secret from the others. Even the child Kim had was news to other personalities years after her birth. Perhaps most surprising of all is that Kim (who prefers to be known as Patricia, the currently dominant personality) lives a normal life with her 14-year-old daughter. This is the best multiple-personality biography in a long time. --Donna Chavez
