About the Author

David Flint is Head of Primary Teacher Training at University College, Worcester, UK. He has written many educational books for children, including Continents: Europe (Hodder Wayland).

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-It's too bad that this book's oversized format will be off-putting to many middle schoolers, because it's too advanced for elementary-aged readers, especially those with no background on the UK. Flint concentrates his discussion on the land, general demographical and environmental trends, and economics. Sans-serif typefaces, well-reproduced full-color photographs, and good graphs and charts on every double-page spread make the title attractive. However, the graphs are not always self-explanatory; the few general maps show major cities and rivers, but omit many of the towns, regions, and shires mentioned in the text. There is a minimum of British terminology, but most youngsters will not understand "rates" for "taxes," and, unfortunately, the glossary doesn't help. Terms such as "pollution," "commuter," and "national parks" are included, while less-familiar concepts are not. The index is also spotty. Unfortunately, this is neither the kind of specialized resource that merits a place on the reference shelf, nor can it stand alone for term papers because of its narrow focus. The World Almanac, World Book Encyclopedia or Stateman's Yearbook will serve students better.
