Grade 6-9-The text of this eye-catching, picture-laden overview of the forces and events that lead to the demise of the Soviet satellites in Eastern Europe and of what has transpired since then is sadly dated. The description of fighting in the former Yugoslavia doesn't mention "ethnic cleansing"; the narrative on Poland focuses on Lech Walesa, whose influence has waned; the section on Romania ends with the 1990 elections after the executions of the Ceausescus. The book is organized by topic, such as "East meets West," "Ethnic Conflict," and "Going Private." Because the countries of this amorphous region have little in common (except for the Soviet connection), it may be confusing for students unfamiliar with the region's complexity to read about general topics before they have a basic understanding of its cultures, politics, and history. The book's lack of currency and generalizations may lead to confusion and misimpressions.
