PreSchool-Grade 1-Basic introductions to the senses. For the most part, technical descriptions are kept simple and include a minimum of new vocabulary. Unfortunately, the working of the human eye is compared to a camera and its functions, which-in all probability-won't be familiar to the intended audience. The concept of limited perception is woven into the brief presentations of how certain senses are experienced by the body. "Rachel is deaf. This means that she can't hear very much at all." The books end with a list of activities to help children focus on the topic at hand, e.g. watching TV with the sound turned down and sniffing out a hidden perfumed cloth. The humorous watercolor cartoons are upbeat and realistic, but too sketchy in their depiction of human biology. Paul Showers's "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out-Books" (HarperCollins) are better choices for slightly older readers.
