Haughton offers a simple explanation of the anatomy of the ear to help children understand various types of hearing loss and their causes, from infection to fluid in the ear. Hearing aids, cochlear implants, and TTYs are described, as are various methods of communication, such as sign language, finger spelling, and lip reading. Westcott gives a brief explanation of how the eye normally functions and looks at some of the causes of visual impairment, such as cataracts, disease, glaucoma, and other conditions.
