Mike Gordon is an ever-popular and award-winning cartoonist. He has produced over 500 cards for Hallmark and over 300 picture books for various publishers. His talent has been rewarded with numerous awards including Berol Cartoonist of the Year `1988` and runner up for the Trento Fra realto e Follia `1990`. He was also nominated for the Silver Quill Award `Germany, 1991` and for the Book and Magazine Illustrator of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society `1995`. The author, Louise Spilsbury, has written many books for children on a wide range of subjects.
Spilsbury offers a take-charge how-to manual that fulfills the increasing demand for resources to combat the challenges of adolescent interpersonal relationships. It begins with a general definition of what bullying is (and is not) and explores causes of such behaviors. It also tackles timely issues such as cyberbullying and the problems that social media can exacerbate. The crux of the book, however, is strategies for making oneself “bully-proof” through relevant, applicable, and practical suggestions. Spilsbury discusses taking control, assertive behaviors, and the power of surrounding oneself with positive peers, while a situational quiz helps readers practice these coping strategies. The book also explains how to decide when bullying crosses the line into abuse and how to get help from trusted adults. Gordon’s illustrations are cartoonish, appealing, and fun, and a list of websites and hotlines is included in the appendix. Offering a message of resilience and hope, this is a valuable resource on an immensely hot issue. Grades 3-6. --Erin Anderson
