Synopsis
The Farmer family considers itself lucky to have come through the Great War intact and are contented with their lot. Except Cissy, the eldest daughter, who longs to leave Canning Town for a better life, whatever the cost. The price Langley Makepeace demands is very high. He sweeps Cissy off her feet and into the brittle, gay world she has dreamt of, leaving Eddie Bennett, the boy everyone in Canning Town assumed she would marry, to face rejection. When some of the glamour begins to fade Cissy begins to question whether she has, in fact, achieved her dream of a better life.
