Through a number of theoretical contributions and a series of case studies, this book illustrates and analyzes the different approaches in the 1990s to building in an historic context. These will range from Krier's historicist theories, to the design methods of Foster who has rediscovered the Classical roots of the Modern Movement, in buildings such as the Carre d'Art in Nimes next to one of the finest surviving Roman Temples. The projects selected for the case studies come from throughout Europe. The book will contribute to a continuing debate which has been fuelled by the media and which will remain highly controversial. With the approach of the next milleniumn the search for an appropriate late-twentieth century architecture becomes more urgent as we evaluate past achievements and seek an urban architecture which is the true expression of our age. Following the debasement of the Modern Movement, the upsurge in the conservation movement and the excesses of many Post-Modern buildings, a more sensitive response to new intervention in the historic urban context is developing.

From the Publisher:
'Context: new buildings in historic settings' stems from a seminar held at The University of York, Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies, which drew together leading architects, urban managers, policy makers and client bodies. The outcome was an invigorating debate, which spanned from Robert Adam's advocacy for traditional design to the uncompromising but sublime correctness of Foster and Partners' insertions into historic settings. The contributors provide an invaluable statement of the interests, concerns and ambitions facing the guardians, managers and designers of our urban heritage as we enter the twenty-first century. For policy makers, owners, and amenity groups the book provides a balanced overview of current attitudes to managing change in historic environments. For professionals of conservation and architecture it presents a challenging and comprehensive view of the philosophies of respected designers and administrators to the central issue of how to cherish our built heritage without separating it from everyday life.
