Under Queen Victoria's reign, the village of Scalby flourished as the 'genteel suburb' of Scarborough. Eminent men and women of the time resided or met here, not least J.W. Rowntree, the Quaker educationalist and cocoa magnate of York. Royalty was entertained at Scalby; Dr Barnardo and Lord Baden-Powell were no strangers hereabouts; Atkinson Grimshaw painted at Yew Court; the eccentric Edwin Brough, whose pack of bloodhounds became famous during the hunt for 'Jack the Ripper', built the 'Queen Anne' style Scalby Manor for his new bride; Sir William Wordsworth was a sidesman at the parish church - but what of the common man?
In 1887 a fourteen-year-old boy came to Scalby to work as a coachman to Mr. J.A. Cooke. After many years he took employment with Lord Airedale, proprietor of the Hull News, and from 1912 to his retirement in 1925 he was in the employ of Mrs. J.W. Rountree of Low Hall, Scalby. He died in 1941, an active member of the Church and community and a well-respected man.
Throughout his life this man's passion was to collect and piece together a scrapbook and diary of the village, inheriting the task from his mother and passing it onto his own children - who kept it up until the 1950s. In this small, fat scrap-book the family of EDWIN KIDD has a unique and priceless account of the history of Scalby and its residents. It is this treasury which forms the kernel of Village Tales, told, with the help of detailed references and contemporary photographs, through the legacy of three generations of Scalby folk.
