About the Author
Joan Lane, formerly a Wellcome Research Fellow, is Senior Teaching Fellow in modern British, local and medical history at the University of Warwick, and General Editor of the Dugdale Society. She is the author of Apprenticeship in England, 1600-1914 (UCL, 1996) and John Hall and his Patients (Sutton, 1996), and has contributed numerous articles to books and journals including Medical History and Country Life.
