Did you know that scientist Alhazen faked madness in order to found modern optics? Or that "tin lizzie" (the model T Ford) was the first car to be built on an assembly line? Showcasing 1,000 groundbreaking moments in history, this book tells the story behind each discovery. Find out how some of the world's greatest inventive minds made their incredible discoveries and what trials they faced along the way. Clear, comprehensive text together with specially commissioned photographs from the Science Museum collection mean you can find out when the rabies vaccine was discovered or who invented the electric tram, or how Copernicus discovered that the Earth moves around the Sun. With bite-sized features boxes and a timeline that puts achievements into context at a glance, this is a valuable reference for every significant human invention and discovery, from fire, trigonometry, toothpaste, and space rockets to DNA technology, black holes and beyond. From accidental discoveries to meticulously worked-out theories, this is a remarkable record of human achievement from the dawn of the human race to the present day.

Roger Bridgman studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge, but worked for several years as a graphic designer. After studying electronics, he became a design engineer at Marconi. Roger was Curator of Communications at the Science Museum for over ten years, during which he wrote DK's Eyewitness Science: Technology and gained an MSc in History of Technology at Imperial College, London.
Grade 5-9-Instantly recognizable as a DK production, this book contains numerous entries on a variety of scientific discoveries and inventions. Encyclopedic in style, it is profusely illustrated and attractive. Its graphics convey a lot of the information and help compensate for the brevity of the text. The topics are presented at a rate of approximately five per page; therefore, the treatments are rather superficial. A small number of them are better developed within separate boxes, while occasional longer entries go into more detail, covering two full pages. The arrangement is chronological, and some entries include cross-references to related areas. A running time line along the bottom of the pages lists historical and cultural events happening at the same time as the scientific events. This book is larger and includes more entries than typical "Eyewitness" titles, but provides generally less information per entry. It is, however, an enjoyable source that makes clear the chronological relationships among the major developments of scientific progress.
