From a seed to an apple on a tree, an egg to a chick, a tadpole to a frog, a poppy flower to a seedhead, this natural history book introduces young children to the amazing ways animals and plants change as they grow. All the stages of development are clearly numbered, and lead the child logically through each cycle, as the mysteries of germination, gestations, metamorphosis, and incubation are carefully explained in simple language.

PreSchool-Grade 2-This effective introduction presents, in a spacious format, four basic steps of growth for various plants and animals. A double-page spread is devoted to each creature or plant. Clearly numbered boxes contain uncluttered, full-color photographs and a simple sentence or two describing the specific changes that take place. Introductory sections invite readers to match the "babies" with their mothers. Most of them will be easily identified by young children, but answers are provided at the end of the book. A table of contents and index make information easily accessible. A visual treat for youngsters that teachers and parents will appreciate for its realistic presentation.

Ages 3-6. The Dorling Kindersley books are starting to look a lot alike, but they still look great. In this latest title, young children can watch the early step-by-step development of plants that grow from seeds, animals that hatch from eggs, and animals that have live births. It is the pristine photographs of the latter--ragged kittens, bald rabbits, furry puppies, and leggy foals--that will enchant the target audience. The section on fauna, more clearly written than that on flora, does a good job comparing the size, shape, and color of the offspring with that of their parents. Julie Corsaro
