Synopsis

One hundred teddy bears have been invited to a party. Can you find them all on the page? "The Counting Book," a companion title to "The Alphabet Book," DK's successful ABC picture-puzzle book, gives the same search-and-find visual treatment to numbers - Every page has a different story to tell. From one baby celebrating her first birthday to 1,000 odds and ends-the photographic fun on each page means kids just won't want to stop counting - Riddles, questions, and picture-puzzles on each page teach 3-7 year olds numbers from 1 to 1,000.- Eight puppies playing, 10 toes wiggling, 70 bugs crawling-how many numbers can you find?

From Booklist

The publisher's familiar, very large-size format, with close-up photographs in brilliant colors, is a lively way to draw toddlers and older preschoolers into a book that is as much about play as about counting and math. Each page shows a number of objects that kids know and care about, one page each from 1 to 20, then in 10s up to 100, and finally a view of 1,000. On the simplest level, the youngest children will identify the main objects and count them ("Meet one happy baby, ready to play"). Framing each page are four questions to draw kids into the pictures, not only for counting but also for other basic concepts, such as color, patterns, and size ("How many stars can you count on the red jeans?" "Are there enough dog biscuits for each hungry puppy?"). The pictures of the big numbers are fun, too, climaxing with 100 teddy bears waiting for a story. The number 1,000 is like an afterword for older kids, all kinds of things arranged in groups of 10, a glimpse for all of us of what a huge number looks like. Hazel Rochman
