When the copper mines of Cornwall began to close down at the end of the 1870s, many men left for the golden land of Australia, intending to earn enough money to bring their families out. Sam Hooper was one such emigrant, but he had to leave his love behind - Emily - because her vicar father didn't consider him good enough for her. But Emily was not to be thwarted and when her father dies after a stroke and she learns she will be thrown out of the vicarage, she decides to go to Australia and hunt down Sam. Accompanied by Margaret and her two sons looking for their man, Charlie, they arrive at Kadina. Margaret discovers Charlie has fallen into bad ways and Emily hears Sam is married to a girl he met on his ship out. About the Author:
E V Thompson was born in London and spent nine years in the Navy before joining Bristol police. He moved to Hong Kong, then Rhodesia and had over 200 stories published before returning to England to become a full-time writer. In 1977 Chase the Wind won the Best Historical Novelist Award.

In Thompson's three-hanky historical romance, a minister's plucky daughter hunts for her suitor, who has left the impoverished mines of 1870s Cornwall for the wilds of Australia, where he has vanished. While the characters and situations seem conventional, the author presents them in graceful, straightforward prose against a rich and convincing tapestry of period detail. British actor/singer Anne Dover has a lovely, dignified voice, which she uses to good advantage in narrative passages. Her considerable mimetic skill and facility with accents serve her well with dialogue. The overall feel is reminiscent of "Masterpiece Theater."
