Synopsis
The motto of the boarding school to which Tommy Bedford is dispatched is Fortune Favours the Brave. It's 1959 and the school bristles with bullies and sadistic staff. Tommy, a quirky loner, obsessed with cowboys and Indians, needs all the bravery he can summon. Salvation comes when his glamorous actress sister is swept off to Hollywood by one of his heroes, TV cowboy Ray Montane. But with the Cold War looming, the sinister side of Tinseltown seeps through and Tommy and Diane soon find themselves in jeopardy. Forty years on, Tommy has to confront his boyhood ghosts when his own son finds himself charged with murder.

About the Author
Nicholas Evans was a screenwriter and film producer before writing his first novel, The Horse Whisperer. He lives in Devon.

As the story begins, a boy visits his mother, a convicted murderer, in prison. From there, listeners meet him as a younger child who loves Westerns and hates boarding school. Then the story flashes forward to his present-day life in Montana. Who better to tell a twisted story that skips from era to era than Michael Emerson of "Lost"? As a narrator, Emerson is soft-spoken, providing just enough emphasis on those tantalizing clues to keep listeners' attention. He's also good with a wide range of voices, from those of Britain to those of the American West. As with "Lost," the puzzle isn't ultimately that important, but the details of protagonist Tom Bedford's troubled past and present ultimately prove fascinating.
