Synopsis
As Manchester celebrates its 150th anniversary in 1996, this fascinating and moving book by Gary Samson brings to life the industrial and immigrant experiences which gave birth to this great city in the nineteenth century and continued to shape Manchester's destiny well into the twentieth century. More than 150 black & white photographs, ranging from the 1860's to the 1930's, lead us back into a part of Manchester's past which must never be allowed to be hidden or forgotten. Over a century ago, Manchester's mills drew thousands of immigrants, their differing aspirations, struggles, and destinies. In doing so, he creates a vivid picture of life in Manchester over nearly a century of rapid industrial change.
