Time’s up for Bazza Mackenzie. His stranglehold on Portsmouth’s cocaine market has earned him millions of dollars he’s invested in legitimate businesses. The police have mounted an operation code-named Tumbril to take down the city’s biggest criminal. But when the detective in charge is nearly killed in a mysterious hit-and-run, it falls to Joe Faraday to put Mackenzie away. Tumbril is a career opportunity of a lifetime, but the team at the heart of the operation is fighting a war of its own. Then Faraday’s son is arrested after a student dies from a heroin overdose, and Faraday finds himself totally isolated. Just who can he really trust?

About the Author:
Graham Hurley is an award-winning TV documentary maker who now writes full time. He lived in Portsmouth for 20 years. He is married and has grown up children. He now lives in Exmouth, Devon.
From AudioFile:
Portsmouth, England's, mean streets provide the backdrop as DI Joe Faraday and his cruder counterpart, DC Paul Winter, try to trap Bazza McKenzie, a well-known local drug dealer. Currently, McKenzie appears to have gone straight, but the cops don't believe it. The vacuum left by McKenzie's going "'legit" is being filled by street gangs and foreign suppliers. Sadly, this production is an unfortunate mismatch between material and narrator. Hurley's plot is well constructed and should reflect excitement, danger, and occasional moments of droll police humor, but Tim Pepper's reading is lackluster. While his accents ring true, his vocal tones are somber and dark, with little if any differentiation between characters. CUT TO BLACK is complex and thoughtful, offering an exceptional grasp of believable human conflicts. It deserves a more energetic reading.
