Synopsis

Nicci French meets Donna Tartt in this provocative tale of three girls whose friendship has deadly consequences.

In a small-town high school in 1988, three misfit girls join forces to form the Bitch Goddesses, a take-no-prisoners gang of fierce teenage rebellion. Rennie, the stunningly attractive straight-A student, finds herself way out of her depth when she embarks on an affair with her married teacher. Cherry builds a shrine to Princess Diana in her bedroom while nursing her hippy mother through her coke-fuelled rages. Amy tears up her cheerleader's uniform while her drunken parents concentrate on presenting a façade of perfect family life to the outside world. The three girls swear to stick together, whatever life throws at them, until one night when something so horrific happens it shatters their friendship for ever.

Fifteen years on, Rennie is a writer living in New York, struggling to keep her life on track and hiding an erotic obsession. In her Lake Superior show-home, a heavily pregnant Amy is certain that her husband is cheating on her and that she is jinxed by her past. Cherry, a model patient in an institution, suffers horrific nightmares of four red letters carved on human skin. The Bitch Goddesses may have grown up, but one way or another they must come to terms with a shared past...

Review

"Don't disbelieve the hype... The Bitch Goddess Notebook is as good a debut as it's cracked up to be. It's edgy, smart and sexy, like its heroines... What could have been just another coming-of-age story is redeemed by strong narrative voices, pungent writing and a splendid Grand Guignol finale." TATLER, June 05 "[A] crackling story" RED, June 05 "There's a buzz about this book that tells us it's going to be huge this summer... it's more bitch lit than chick lit. Reminiscent of cult movie 'Heathers', it revels in the seedy underbelly of American life, and features the kind of female angst Alice 'Lovely Bones' Sebold would be proud of... The girls share a dark secret. Believe us when we say you won't be able to rest until you find out what it is." GLAMOUR, June 05 "An angsty, serious novel of lost dreams and sexual damage" MARIE CLAIRE, June "And now for something completely different... If you're tired of fluffy chick lit and fancy a trip to the dark side, the debut novel from poet Martha O'Connor is a bloody (very bloody, in fact) good place to start. If you loved Heathers and The Craft, this is for you -- it's dark, compelling and not for the faint-hearted." HEAT, 21 May "Dark and compelling..." NORTHERN ECHO, 28 June "You'll absolutely love this dark, yet provocative page-turner." OK! HOT STARS, 7 June
