The peace of the Cotswold village of Thrush Green is about to be disturbed...
Children's voices ring out from the school playground; in the distance there is the gentle hum of a lawnmower; and all around the village, birdsong can be heard. But despite all evidence to the contrary, in the village of Thrush Green feelings are running high...
The rector has a plan for the neglected churchyard which doesn't meet with universal approval; there is a clash of personalities at the local school; and someone has returned to the village after an absence of fifty years.
Before long, the tranquillity of the Cotswold village is shattered.

Miss Read is the pseudonym of Mrs. Dora Saint, a former schoolteacher beloved for her novels of English rural life, especially those set in the fictional villages of Thrush Green and Fairacre. The first of these, Village School, was published in 1955, and Miss Read continued to write until her retirement in 1996. In the 1998, she was awarded an MBE, or Member of the Order of the British Empire, for her services to literature. She lives in Berkshire.
Miss Read wrote 30 novels about life in Thrush Green and nearby Fairacre. Each one of them carries the reader into cozy and complex small town life. The battles are over such things as how to tidy up the cemetary, whether a son should go to boarding school, whether Dotty should drive, and what to do about the new schoolteacher. Gwen Watford reads with gentle humor and understanding. Her voice is not too plummy, although one definitely hears a county style. This production will delight fans of the American Mitford series by Jan Karon. B.H.B. (c) AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
