Madge was only four years old when she fell in love with Cornish sea. Somehow, at that moment, she knew she would always return to St.Ives and that all the major events of her life would happen there. It was there she and her mother went to recover from a heart-rending family tragedy; there she was forced reluctantly into marriage and there she fell into a wild and passionate wartime love. It was there she saw her children grow and love and cope with the secret legacies the years had left them, until finally they became more than just summer visitors. This is the story of a remarkable woman and the family she held together.

Susan Sallis is the author of over twenty novels, many of which are set in the West Country. She was born in Gloucestershire and now lives in Somerset with her family.
Summer love takes on a whole new meaning in this contrived yet compelling adventure in the life of Madge Bridges. Set against the romantic Cornish coast, the plot captures glimpses of Madge as she faces the complications of childhood, adolescence, motherhood, and old age. Each summer brings about a permanent change for her and her family--sometimes replenishing, sometimes devastating--while reaffirming the social characteristics that distinguish the temporary inhabitants from the natives. Sketched in a series of annual episodes (which span more than 60 years), the book is relatively enjoyable although it leans in the direction of soap opera. Also, the "happy ending" in somewhat distasteful.
