Synopsis

Lance Kilkenny has the reputation of being the fastest gun in the West, that once there is a gunfight he leaves the district right after it is over, and that very little is known about him, even what he looks like. One day some time back Mort Davis saved Kilkenny's life after he was shot up and now Davis has sent out word that he needs Kilkenny's help. Mort has filed a claim on a water hole near Lost Creek in the Live Oak country. The district is dominated by two wealthy cattlemen, Webb Steele and Chet Lord, and both are at loggerheads, each one claiming for himself the water hole that David occupies. There is a mystery man who has a secret cabin in Apple Canon just above the saloon operated by Nina Riordan and her bodyguard, Jamie Brigo. It is this man who is responsible for stirring up the trouble between Steele and Lord, figuring they will kill each other off so he can claim both their ranches. There is also a mad-dog killer loose in the district and there have been a number of murders over the years. Kilkenny enters the fracas, meets and falls in love with Nita, and then works to get Steele and Lord to realise that they are pawns in a bigger game.

From the Publisher

Kilkenny has a debt to pay, and he isn't about to let the friend who saved his life go down in a range war. But when the gunman tries to stop the fighting, he finds there's more at stake than land or wire. Someone has big ideas for the Live Oak country, and an army of hired guns to back him up. And Kilkenny doesn't watch out, he'll pay the debt with his own blood.

From the Back Cover

Kilkenny owes Mort Davis his life, so when Davis finds himself caught in a violent struggle between two powerful and arrogant families, Kilkenny answers the call for help. He tries to broker a peace between the warring patriarchs, Webb Steele and Chet Lord, but soon realizes that Steele and Lord are merely pawns in a sinister plot that could destroy both men, their families... and anyone who gets in the way. It's a grab for money and power, involving a mysterious and reclusive beauty, a psychotic killer, and a dark figure from Kilkenny's past who's determined to get what he wants -- and what he wants most of all is Kilkenny dead.
