When her parents bring home their new baby, Grace must adjust to a new presence in the household. Any soon-to-be sibling -- and of course, any parent expecting the arrival of a newborn -- will find the simple, rhythmic text easy to identify with and a joy to read aloud. Friends and relatives will find this tenderly illustrated book the ideal new baby gift they have been searching for.

Christian Birmingham is an acknowledged star of children's book illustration. Christian collaborated with Ian Whybrow on Kingfisher's acclaimed A Baby for Grace. He has been nominated for the prestigious Mother Goose Award and has been described in Britan's Guardian newspaper as "a modern-day Degas."
PreSchool-While waiting for her mother and a new baby to come home, Grace tries to help but is just too small for some of the tasks she chooses. When the infant does arrive, the grown-ups say, "No" and continue to criticize her behavior. Finally, after a few tears and with help from her father, she gives her new sibling a flower bouquet and all the people say, "YES GRACEY!" The text is realistic and convincingly captures the frustrations and innocent desires of a child. The narration is a bit stiff and at times the clipped style lessens the immediacy of the story, and yet young readers, especially those with a new sibling in the house, will easily identify with Grace. What warmth is lacking in the text is amply supplied in the sun-dappled pictures. Grace looks as though she could step off of the page. With an impressionist's sensibility toward light, the artist has created rich pastel drawings that are full of life and movement. A close-up of Grace holding the infant is a true gem and while her family may be concerned for its safety, readers can see the love in her embrace.
