Synopsis

LEVEL 5: READING

FLUENTLY

For readers fast developing in confidence and ability. There is more text than at level 4, with more difficult vocabulary, more sophisticated information, and a range of tenses and sentence types. Information is still clear and interesting.

Guided Reading Levels: P, Q

Starting with the basic question "What is space?" and exploring all aspects of space including the earth's relationship with the sun, the moon, our neighbors in the solar system, our galaxy, astronomy, meteors, comets, space travel and much more, Kingfisher Readers L5: Space by James Harrison is a wonderful first introduction to this essential subject. At this level the text and pictures combine in a full reading experience with sophisticated vocabulary, primary and secondary layers of information, and a robust glossary and index for research. Newly independent readers will enjoy the sense of accomplishment they get from completing this title on their own.

Reviews

Each of these new titles in the Kingfisher Readers series, variously leveled from 2 through 5, offers something different to young readers. The use of visuals is simple but effective—from one large, bright photo per page to a mix of photos, illustrations, and labeled diagrams. Space (level 5) zooms out from Earth to the moon, planets, solar system, and galaxy beyond but also tracks human interaction with and understanding of space. Each title begins with a note to parents by literacy specialist Ellie Costa on how to effectively use the book, including helpful activities and questions for warm-ups, pre-reading, during reading, and after reading—tips that could also be useful for classroom or library use. Grades K-3. --Aronin, Miriam
