About the Author:

Miranda Smith is a long-standing editor of information books for both children and adults. She has a particular interest in the field of natural history and has written books and articles for children on the subject. Miranda Smith has written many books for the Kingfisher Navigators series, including Animals, Human Body, and Knights & Castles.

From School Library Journal:
Gr 3-6–The process of mummification, the pyramids, and the treasures of Tutankhamen are only a few of the aspects of ancient Egypt that continue to fascinate readers, young and old. This book provides an overview for general interest as well as for those seeking information for reports. Topics include geography, rulers, and daily life. Also provided is information on tomb raiders, trade, taxes, and war. Each chapter spread is filled with colorful illustrations, photographs, and maps. The chapter on the dynasties gives a clear explanation of the five eras of Egyptian history. An explanation of the types of crowns worn by the pharaohs is also included. Focus, however, is not solely on royalty. A chapter on the pyramid builders describes the lives of these workers. Descriptions of their villages, tools, and even their graffiti seem to transport readers to Giza. Children also learn about some of the powerful women of Egypt, including Hatschepsut and Cleopatra VII. The last spread depicts the end of the ancient Egyptian civilization and the beginning of the Ptolemaic rule. The text is strategically placed to provide information and explanations of the illustrations without overwhelming readers.–Lana Miles, Jackson Elementary School, Rosenberg, TX. (c) Copyright 2010.
