"In the title novella, which takes place in New York, two very different, antagonistic brothers confront the truths of their family's present and past when they find that their father has died - or been murdered. As the brothers learn what might have happened, one, a blunt film producer, will not let the other, a wavering film professor, continue to hide from human truths behind theoretical ones. Father-son, marital, and racial relations enter into the conflict between them. In keeping with the brother's careers, parts of the novella are told in screenplay form, heightening the work's humor as well as its drama." "This volumes' nine stories are distinguished by their wit, story-telling, and clever twists. In one, a hot young novelist known for his crude honesty ends up writing a dishonest screenplay of his latest novel. another is a moving, deftly crafted tragedy about a Greek sailor whose rise and fall are one and the same."--BOOK JACKET.

Frederic Raphael won an Academy Award for his screenplay for Darling and cowrote the screenplay for Eyes Wide Shut with Stanley Kubrick. He is the author of 19 novels, including Coast to Coast and A Double Life.
Raphael sets the novella that gives this collection of short fiction its name in New York City. Stanley and Sidney Oppenheim are brothers, the former a professor of film studies and the latter a film producer. When their father, Julius, dies, they uncover some family secrets--What was the real relationship between Julius and the Beauregards, the family of the Oppenheims' black chauffeur? And why did Julius take such an interest in Moss, the chauffeur's grandson? The surprises at the end, along with elements of filmmaking (the narrative is largely driven by dialogue, and parts of the novella are even presented in the form of a screenplay) surface again in most of the stories that follow. "Shared Credit" deals with a triangle involving a rewrite man, his wife, and his more successful writer friend. The most poignant story, "Bread, Money and Liberty," hones in on the complex relationship of a couple taking a delayed honeymoon in Mexico. Readers who like cosmopolitan, sophisticated fiction should appreciate this collection. Mary Ellen Quinn
