Synopsis
When 14-year-old Rebecca's parents die of smallpox, she and her brother and sister have to leave their smart home in Kent and move to London's East End. After initial trauma, they adapt to poorer living conditions and grow to love the area. Five years on, aged 19, Rebecca meets Jimmy Jackson, the East End bookie with deep brown eyes and rugged good looks. After initially disliking Jimmy for his profession, Rebecca comes to realize she has found that rarest of men: one who is as kind as he is attractive. But when their relationship grows to love, an old flame of Jimmy's turns up with a devastating revelation...
