Synopsis
Set the mainsail, lower the jib, heave anchor, batten down the hatches, cast off the stayropes and away! It may not be the high seas, but the art of sailing a barge down the Thames fully laden with straw then up the North Sea coast to land coal, or whatever the orders are, is not an easy one as our author discovered on his many early berths. Add the dangers of wartime, an ill wind and unpredictable dockers and crew mates, and it will take some bargemanship to take a curious boy to teenage skipper, not to mention the odd scrape and favourable wind.
