A sensuous and richly-imagined historical novel that centers on a skilled young carpet weaver, her arranged marriage, and her quest for self-determination in 17th-century Persia.
In 17th-century Iran, a 14-year-old woman believes she will be married within the year. But when her beloved father dies, she and her mother find themselves alone and without a dowry. With nowhere else to go, they are forced to sell the brilliant turquoise rug the young woman has woven to pay for their journey to Isfahan, where they will work as servants for her uncle, a rich rug designer in the court of the legendary Shah Abbas the Great.
Despite her lowly station, the young woman blossoms as a brilliant designer of carpets, a rarity in a craft dominated by men. But while her talent flourishes, her prospects for a happy marriage grow dim. Forced into a secret marriage to a wealthy man, the young woman finds herself faced with a daunting decision: forsake her own dignity, or risk everything she has in an effort to create a new life.

From AudioFile:
There is no better narrator for this exotic story than Aghdashloo, whose gorgeously accented English and mellifluous timbre match the novels lush language and style. Set in seventeenth-century Persia and filled with drama and poetic description, THE BLOOD OF FLOWERS will attract a variety of listeners who will be enchanted by Aghdashloos performance. Listeners who crave a work of historical fiction or an inspirational story of an individual crafting her own independent life will appreciate this fascinating work. Aghdashloos smooth tones inspire close listening to the authors prose. Those who are so inspired will appreciate the text for its imagery and beauty, as well its intriguing family saga. Book Description Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Set in seventeenth-century Iran, The Blood of Flowers is the powerful and haunting story of a young girl's journey from innocence to adulthood. The novel begins in the 1620s in a remote village where the narrator (whose name, in the Iranian storytelling tradition, we are never to know) lives with her mother and rug-maker father. On the sudden death of her father, our heroine and her mother fall upon hard times and are forced to travel to the bustling, beautiful, exotic city of Isfahan where relatives take them in. Everything is new: the grudging charity of her aunt, the encouragement of her uncle, one of the finest carpet-makers in the world, who begins to teach her his craft, the treacherous friendship of the daughter of rich neighbours. And there's an adventure ahead which will introduce her to the sensual side of life as well as to the cruelty of betrayal and rejection before she finds her way to contentment and possibly, even, to happiness, in a world full of contrasts and dangers. Long-listed for the Orange Prize. A stunning and evocative novel set in exotic seventeenth-century Iran, with the power of THE KITE RUNNER, A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS and HALF OF A YELLOW SUN.
