In the first novel of a brand-new trilogy, Simon Brown introduces Lynan, the youngest prince of Grenda Lear. Ignored by his family, he is forced to flee his home after he's betrayed. But he vows to return to claim his inheritance-a magical key that could help him change his destiny.

The queen of Grenda Lear has ruled well by means of the four Keys of Power (the title of the series this book launches). But now she is failing. On her deathbed, she gives one key to each of her children, none of whom, including youngest son Lynan, thought that the youngest son would inherit anything. Lynan was the only child whose father wasn't of noble birth and, consequently, was never given the full rights and responsibilities of a royal prince. Now, while Lynan's brother princes are prepared to work with him, the one and only princess despises him more than ever. Then the new king is murdered, and Lynan is accused. He and a few comrades flee, with Lynan's key. But where will they be safe? And what will become of Grenda Lear if the keys are separated? For a rather generic fantasy, this isn't bad: good commuter reading. Frieda Murray
