K-Gr 1-A story about building a scarecrow. Rojas's computer artwork offers lively, brightly colored scenes of a girl and boy on a farm as they happily gather "Old shirt./Old Pants./[and] Stuff them both with hay." Unfortunately, there are several missed opportunities for picture clues, making this a frustrating choice for emerging readers.

Gr. 1. In this story from the Compass Point Early Reader series, two children gather old clothes, stuff them with hay, draw a face on a pumpkin, and assemble the parts to make a scarecrow. They mount it in the garden to frighten the crows, though the last illustration shows the birds almost cuddling up to the friendly-looking fellow. The text consists of short, rhythmic phrases featuring simple words. Rhyming makes the reading just a little easier and more satisfying. Brightened with gentle colors, the pictures reflect the cheerful tone of the story and add a few little surprises along the way. A bit bland but still appealing to beginning readers. Carolyn Phelan
