Grade 2-5 - Pet enthusiasts will enjoy the copious, colorful photos and interesting facts in these books. Each one is written from the animal's viewpoint and focuses on its origins and domestication, behavior, and physiology. Bird has several spreads on individual bird types, and Cat has a chart comparing common breeds. Although there is some discussion of the creatures' basic needs and predilections, these are not pet-care books. Sidebars offer additional tidbits. Time lines indicating important events for these animals through history, directions for using the FactHound search engine to find more information, and listings for pertinent associations are appended. Beginning with their colorful covers, which sport smiling children posing with the featured animals, these titles will draw youngsters. The engaging writing style also makes them perfect choices for reluctant readers. - Lynda Ritterman, Atco Elementary School, Waterford, NJ
