Born in Spain in 1547, Miguel de Cervantes is considered one of Spain’s outstanding writers, and his most important work, Don Quixote, is believed by many to be one of the greatest novels ever written. Many of the events in Don Quixote were inspired by the author’s own adventurous life. Cervantes’ experiences as a soldier, prisoner, tax collector, and supplier for the Spanish Armada gave him a wealth of subject matter on which to draw in creating his novels, poems, and plays.

Noted historian and award-winning author Don Nardo has written many books for young people about American history. Nardo lives with his wife, Christine, in Massachusetts.
Seldom does a writer’s life story include heroism in sea battles, capture by the enemy, and failed attempts to escape military prisons, but Cervantes was no ordinary author. In tracing his subject’s life and literary contributions, Nardo doesn’t hype the drama but lets it arise from the story itself, and this particularly fine entry in the Signature Lives: Renaissance Era series is stronger for that restraint. Attractive book design, good paper, and well-chosen illustrations contribute to the biography’s finesse, while a time line, glossary, source notes, and bibliographies round out the presentation.
