About the Author:
Peter Malone has illustrated a number of picture books for Orion. He was commissioned by the Royal Mail for a set of Christmas stamps. He lives in Bath with his wife and two daughters.

Seeing her fate, the boy leads the animals to her rescue. They drive the hunter away, and the children live ever after in harmonious happiness with nature. It is an old theme?the wrong-headed impulse to civilize and thus improve humans who are more at home in the wilderness?given its strongest articulation in the Romantic philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Here it is given a fresh and artful interpretation in words and pictures. The text is brief and uncomplicated, but graceful; the vocabulary and sentence structure spare. The story can be read independently through its handsome illustrations. They resemble an astonishing set of aesthetically composed tableaux that tell the story like a balletic melodrama abundant with the language of gesture?emotional, yet restrained. The lissome young sauvage is a manifestation of freedom and innocence in the natural state. The unshaven hunter carries a gun, traps, keys, and fountain pen as symbols of enslavement.
