There was once a child who was raised by the animals of the forest. Together the wild creatures teach the girl everything she needs to know. She runs silently through the forest, swims in the lake behind the beaver dam, & knows where to find honey & the juiciest berries. Then one day she meets a boy from the village, the apprentice to a cruel hunter. What happens next is the haunting & hauntingly beautiful story of the forest child, about the collision of two worlds.

About the Author:
Peter Malone has illustrated a number of picture books for Orion. He was commissioned by the Royal Mail for a set of Christmas stamps. He lives in Bath with his wife and two daughters.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2?In this classic allegory of a feral girl raised in joyous freedom by the animals of the forest, the child is first patiently and cautiously befriended by a village boy and then captured by an evil hunter. Seeing her fate, the boy leads the animals to her rescue. They drive the hunter away, and the children live ever after in harmonious happiness with nature. It is an old theme?the wrong-headed impulse to civilize and thus improve humans who are more at home in the wilderness?given its strongest articulation in the Romantic philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Here it is given a fresh and artful interpretation in words and pictures. The text is brief and uncomplicated, but graceful; the vocabulary and sentence structure spare. The story can be read independently through its handsome illustrations. They resemble an astonishing set of aesthetically composed tableaux that tell the story like a balletic melodrama abundant with the language of gesture?emotional, yet restrained. The lissome young sauvage is a manifestation of freedom and innocence in the natural state. The unshaven hunter carries a gun, traps, keys, and fountain pen as symbols of enslavement. The artist's mood-evoking palette is earthy?clear and bright when the girl is living happily, murky and dark when she is a prisoner. The effect is highly theatrical and decorative. The underlying philosophy may be arguable, but this is nevertheless a beautifully illustrated story of cruelty overcome by innocent goodness.?Kate McClelland, Perrot Memorial Library, Greenwich, CT
