Charnan Simon is the author of several nonfiction books for children.
Gr. 1^-2, younger for reading aloud. Set in what appears to be a kindergarten classroom, this simple little book features double-page spreads of children engaged in activities such as greeting their teachers, painting, walking to the lunchroom, eating apples, and resting on their mats. A few words on each page add comments such as "Two stuck zippers" and "Nine pairs of partners." Though the words take the reader up from 1 to 10 and back down to 1 again, no numerals appear in the text or even on the classroom clock. Despite this curious omission, the bright line-and-watercolor illustrations make this such a happy classroom that teachers may want to use it as a counting book. Young readers should enjoy seeing familiar school experiences depicted in such a cheerful light. Carolyn Phelan
