Joyce Dunbar has written more than eighty books for children including the bestselling Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep and the much performed Shoe Baby and This is the Star. Her series of short funny novels, Mouse & Mole, has been animated for television. She also teaches a creative writing course on the Greek island of Skyros! Joyce's latest book for Egmont is Squiglet Pig, illustrated by Tim Hopgood.
Reviewed with Tony Bradman's Midnight in Memphis and Selina Young's Big Dog and Little Dog Go Sailing.
Gr. 1-2. Children graduating from episodic easy readers to more extended tales will relish these imports in the Blue Bananas series. Big Dog and Little Dog each display a distinct mix of character traits in several trying situations, notably an encounter with a whale. In Magic Lemonade "bossy boots" Zoe proves to be an irritating but imaginative playmate. Bradman's escapade is the zaniest of the "bunch"; after a UFO damages their pyramid, Mommy Mummy and her well-wrapped family hire the Concrete Sisters (Cleo, Pat, and Nefertiti) to do repairs. Cartoon illustrations, complete with conversation or droll comments in dialogue balloons, capture each tale's level of sophistication. Reinforced hinges and heavy stitching ensure that the hardback books will have a long shelf life--not that they'll stay on the shelves for long. John Peters
