The entrance of Native Americans into the world of cultural resource management is forcing a change in the traditional paradigms that have guided archaeologists, anthropologists, and other CRM professionals. This book examines these developments from tribal perspectives and articulates native views on the identification of cultural resource, how they should be handled and by whom, and what their meaning is in contemporary life. Stapp and Burney also demonstrate the connections between cultural resource and other issues such as native sovereignty, economic development, human rights, and cultural integrity.

"We've written this book to help in the struggle to protect, preserve, and make accessible the cultural resources that are important - no, essential - to native peoples and their ancestral way of life. Really, we written it for those in the struggle: the current and future cultural resource management professionals working for agencies and tribes, tribal members, and others who value the preservation of the resources enough to fight for their conservation and future availability." [from the Preface]
Darby and Michael talked a lot about 'action anthropology' and I would say, "Well what is that?" I wasn't sure what this concept was until I atttended and coauthored a paper at the Society for Applied Anthropology in 1998. I found that the anthropologists claiming to be action anthropologists were actually helping out groups, like Indian tribes, meet their needs and goals. I was amazed to find myself interested in the anthropologists who were at the conference there. They were different - not archaeologists - there was no attitude or arrogance that seemed to rub me the wrong way. There was something more pleasing here than at other conferences. I realized that action-oriented anthropology should be one of our goals. [Jeff Van Pelt, from the Foreword]
